Grief Resources
Losing a loved one can be emotionally difficult and in many cases not something we easily
get over. Losing a precious child can be a tremendously painful experience and, from my
own personal experience, is something we never actually get over. In my experience, it is
more like a process of learning to live with the circumstances. In many situations the
emotional trauma that follows the loss of a loved one is so severe it is very difficult to
describe. The emotional pain can be unbearable with feelings of it possibly never ending.
It may be difficult to feel optimistic about the future again. If you have lost a spouse, a
precious child, a family member or friend, you have probably found there are not many who
understand the deep hurt and emotional pain you are experiencing. This can be a confusing
time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you have never faced
before. You may feel imprisoned in what seems like a totally new and different environment
you are now living in. You suddenly have many questions you want answers to and realize
you don’t know where or who to go.
This is not the time to ignore, overlook, refrain, or refuse God’s love, wisdom, and
guidance. No matter how we feel or how angry we have become because of losing a
precious loved one, we must give our circumstances to God. Instead of focusing on our
emotionally painful circumstances we need to give these circumstances to God and focus
on Him. GOD not only has the answers, HE has all the right answers. Yes, it is my opinion –
without doubt - GOD is not only the answer – GOD is the only answer.
The grief that follows is a normal process of healing and it comes in different phases. Not
being familiar with the different phases of grief can be confusing, depressing, frustrating,
and in some people it can be a combination of all three. It is important to understand grief
and how it works and affects us. The most effective method of understanding grief is
through qualified counseling from licensed and experienced counselors (in my personal
experiences - Christian counselors).
It is important to read books as described in this list or books your counselor recommends;
and participate in small group discussions led by qualified individuals, with others that have
experienced a loss similar to what you are experiencing.
An excellent source for group counseling when experiencing grief and bereavement is
GriefShare. GriefShare is a national organization specializing in group session grief
counseling that is usually offered through churches that offer counseling services with one or
more counselors on staff.
GriefShare sessions have three distinct elements:
1. Video Seminars with Experts: Each week your GriefShare group will watch a video
seminar featuring top experts on grief and recovery. These videos are produced in an
interesting-to-watch television magazine format featuring expert interviews, real-life case
studies, dramatic reenactments and on-location video.
2. Support Discussions with Focus: After viewing the video, you and the other group
members will spend time as a support group, discussing what was presented in that week’s
video seminar and what is going on in your lives.
3. Workbook-Based Personal Study and Reflections: During the week you will have the
opportunity to use your workbook for further personal study of the grieving process and to
help sort out your emotions through journaling. Your group will spend time discussing
questions and comments from the workbook study.
You are welcome to begin attending a GriefShare group at any session. Each is “self-
contained”, so you do not have to attend in sequence. You will find encouragement and help
whenever you begin. You will be able to continue with GriefShare through the next 13-week
cycle and view any of the videos you have not seen. There are thousands of GriefShare
support groups meeting weekly throughout the United States and Canada and many groups
meeting internationally. GriefShare groups are designed so that you can begin attending on
any week. For additional information on GriefShare go to their web site at http://www.
griefshare.org/about/ .
You will find in our website a listing of Grief Counseling Centers. This list shows the
GriefShare support group centers in our area that we have information on.
This is a small listing of books on grief, bereavement and healing. There are over a
thousand books written on grief, certainly too many to list. Web site addresses are also
listed for access to good sources for books, CD’s, and videos available for reading and
studying.
There are also the local sources in the now popular large book stores with coffee shops in
shopping centers, malls, and strip centers. However, some of the best sources for books
on death, grief, bereavement, and healing are local and convenient Christian book stores.
There is also a newer trend evolving with book and gift stores now being established in the
larger and growing churches. A good book and gift store in a church is an excellent source
for these types of books and many other beneficial materials and gifts. A good example of
this is The Source at Pinelake Church on Highway 25 (Lakeland Drive), Phone
601.829.4583 or Email thesource@pinelake.org.
We hope these resources will at least provide some comfort to you, and help you make the
right connections and choices that will provide you with the best guidance. Getting
connected to the right source is very important and you can never go wrong with prayer to
guide you.
